Christian Counseling

As Licensed Professional Counselors, we respect the right of each client to determine the extent to which matters of faith and spirituality are incorporated into the therapeutic work. Therapists will never force their own beliefs on a client, but when a client desires to explore or integrate such matters, we know that approaching therapy from a holistic approach, including faith, can aid in the healing process.

How does incorporating spirituality help in my healing?

In Western culture, we tend to separate out the different parts of ourselves. We go to a doctor or the gym to address the physical, we pursue education to enhance our mental self, we go to church for our spiritual needs and we might go to therapy for our mental and emotional wellbeing. Here at West Michigan Wellness Group, we know that seeing someone as a whole and integrated person and addressing issues from a holistic perspective, contributes to deeper healing and longer-lasting change.

All aspects of our human experience impact each other. Psychology and spirituality, specifically the Christian faith tradition do not have to be at odds. In fact, they compliment each other and offering spiritual support and direction positively impacts progress toward mental and emotional health.

We are also very well aware that hurt happens even in faith communities and addressing spiritual wounds in session with a caring professional leads to healing. Alternatively, for many faith offers hope, peace, purpose and joy, so tapping into the source of those emotions and experiences can be extremely beneficial in the therapeutic process.

What is Christian counseling at West Michigan Wellness Group?

Christian counseling

The term “Christian Counseling” means something different to everyone. If receiving “Christian Counseling” is important to you, please take the time to explain your needs and desires to your counselor. This will help ensure they tailor the sessions to your needs. All of the therapists at West Michigan Wellness Group have Advanced Graduate Degrees in clinical counseling, divinity or related fields. In addition, they each see the world through a Christian worldview. Just as you might define what Christianity means to you differently from someone else, this is also true of our therapists.

That being said, you can rest knowing we cannot, and do not expect our clients to believe exactly how we each do and we respect and appreciate that every individual is at a different place in their journey of belief and understanding. Even if we don’t believe the same, this will not negatively impact your therapeutic results. Each client brings their own story, background, experiences and needs. Our counselors will meet you where you are and assess what might be most helpful on your healing or wellness journey.
